Excellware has upgraded many legacy business basic systems to modern hardware, operating system, and business basic language.
Our approach is to provision a new instance of the application running parallel to the legacy system. The programs are converted from BBx, pro5, Vpro5, Open Basic, Thoroughbred Basic, or Providex to BBj. The data files are also converted, and typically re-converted each night during the testing phase. Every morning the new instance is fully operational and allows user testing that includes data files as of the end of yesterday.
The new instance can be a cloud based or in-house server. It will be running the latest version of Linux that is fully supported where regular security patches and other operating system updates can be installed.
The new instance will be running the latest version of BBj. The application will be launched using the BBj Desktop App and not a terminal emulator such as NetTerm, Power Term, Putty, FacetWIn, or FacetTerm. The Desktop App is installed with a simple click from a web page. The legacy application will run exactly the same on the new instance from both personal computers running Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac computers.
Although server data backups have traditionally been made to tape or writeable CD drives, inhouse servers are now backed up quickly to cloud storage. Cloud servers can be backed up in an image format that enables server replacement in a matter of minutes.
Memory, disc storage, and processing speed can be changed very quickly on cloud servers. Cloud servers can be accessible from work, home, or on-the-road without complex Virtual Private Networks (VPN).
